About
Mother’s Delight performed the first time in 2023, and from the first Mother’s Delight performed for the first time in 2023, and after that first concert it was decided to keep it as a stable, working group. The quartet’s unusual instrumentation combines two winds — a soprano saxophone and a bass clarinet — and two electric polyphonic instruments: an electric guitar and a physically modelled piano. This variety is reflected in the wide and ever-changing sonic palette: from Sjöström’s complex yet expressive melodies to Nikula’s mastery of Western contemporary music and extended techniques, from Mureddu’s deconstructed and morphed piano to Kääriäinen’s ability to blend distorted noises and fragile microsounds.
Aesthetically the group synthesises the different yet overlapping backgrounds of its members, where the sonic radicalism of Kääriäinen and Sjöström blends with echoes of Western contemporary music thanks to Nikula and Mureddu. Nevertheless, constantly promoting a deep yet joyful musical unexpectedness is at the core of this quartet, despite all categorisations.
